From May 15-19, the Pontifical Academy of Science is presenting a study week on the topic “Transgenic Plants for Food Security in the Context of Development.” Most of the speakers are internationally known as vehement supporters of agro-genetic engineering. Some of them are in close contact with genetic engineering companies or even work for these firms, such as, for instance, Eric Sachs of Monsanto, the worldwide biggest supplier of genetically modified seeds. So how did it come about that these supporters of genetic engineering are meeting in the Vatican?
Organization and leadership of these days of study is under the direction of Ingo Potrykus. He became famous as the inventor of “golden rice,” a genetically modified product that is supposed to counter a vitamin A deficiency. It recently made headlines in China and the USA as a result of questionable testing on children and adults. The majority of the board from the Golden Rice Project will now gather together there.
In November of 2000, Pope John Paul II spoke out against the release of GMOs. During a mass attended by approximately 50,000 farmers, the pope stated that the use of genetically modified plants to increase crop yields is against the will of God. But apparently, the Vatican has now changed its mind.
Toward the end of 2003, there was a conference at the Vatican on the topic of genetic engineering. It was organized by the “Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace.” Its president is known as a proponent of GM technology and during the conference he urged the use of genetically modified food to help find a solution to the world-hunger problem, which he called a paramount goal of the Vatican.
Of course, one question would be whether the Vatican would be willing to haul its gold bars out of the cellar and give them to the hungry. Then the people would have everything they need.
In any case, things have gone so far that the “Pontifical Academy of Sciences” invites supporters of genetic engineering from research and science to the Vatican gardens. This is a clear signal to the global public.
One solution to this dilemma would be to ask all GM proponents to eat only GM foods for 2 or 3 years. Perhaps then, we could see more clearly whether GM products are good for all people. Furthermore, most GMO proponents are Christian. And yet, we can read in the Bible, the following story of creation: “And God saw everything that he had made and behold, it was very good.” (Gen. 1:30.31) So, if it was good, why do we now have to improve it?
Can it be that genetic engineering is not meant to improve God’s creation, but to serve the profit drive of certain large companies? But then why is the Vatican now helping this effort?

I recently read an article concerning the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in which they announced a proposal for regulating the meat and milk industry guidelines for genetically engineered animals. Genetically engineered animals have extra genes put into them usually from other animal species. Cloned animals are genetic copies.
When I read the article I found myself wondering what our society has become. In the name of science and ‘for the good of the people’ we have crossed the uncrossable line, which differentiates us from mere humans to human Gods.
The FDA a government mega agency has near unlimited power and uses this power to further their agenda. It has been reported and substantiated that the FDA hierarchy is made up of many physicians, PH.D’s, corporate CEO’s and administrative types that have either been employed by big pharma or other companies that have direct ties to our drug and food industry. Can someone say special interest! It is no secret that past decisions concerning pharmaceutical drugs have been most favorable for drug companies.
Academic scientists and biotechnology companies are developing genetically altered animals. Since there has not been a clear and unambiguous path for the introduction of these mutant animals the FDA is expected to supply the guidelines. The FDA is expected to say that the same laws that cover animal drugs will regulate genetically mutated animals. As you can see we are back to big pharma. The FDA has already ruled that meat and milk from cloned cows, pigs and goats are completely safe and need no oversight whatsoever.
Special interests such as the biotechnology industry have been heavily lobbying congress that oversees the FDA in order to speed up the guidelines to push forward the genetic engineered process. With little to no media coverage concerning this issue the FDA is free to establish the parameters with little opposition. Consumer groups who oppose genetically altered animal’s claim that the FDA has little expertise in determining and evaluating the animal’s ecological impact. Another disturbing fact is that all new applications for approval of new drugs will be completely confidential. The public will not know what animals are being developed and what drugs are being administered.
Barbara Glenn, managing editor of Animal Biotechnology for the biotechnology industry a trade group has stated in regards to the new proposed guidelines, “we feel this will enhance investor confidence in this technology”. Did you notice there was no mention of consumer confidence only confidence for money to pour into their projects.
In the end the consumer has the last say whether or not genetically mutated meat and milk will sell. The public needs to be informed about the pros and cons then and only then can we make an educated decision whether we the people want genetically altered animals in our diet.
As for me I will not consume genetically altered meat if at all possible. The problem is will I positively know that I am not eating genetically altered meat or drinking genetically engineered milk?
I am a proponent of free ranged animals that are completely hormone free and unaltered in any way. With these animals you can fell confident that you are eating and drinking pure natural products unaltered by meddling money hungry companies interested in their fat pay checks. Furthermore our government has no business in governing our food supply. The FDA needs to account for every action it takes in our behalf and stay completely independent from big PHARMA and other special interest.
We the people demand it!
